Hi! I'm Callie Beth Smith, LCSW

"When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a taller fence." – Tori Dunlap

I’m a big believer in sharing what we have and creating space for others—that’s why this quote resonates so deeply with me. I try to live with openness, curiosity, and a spirit of connection. I have two dogs, Maria and Leonard, who bring me so much joy, and I love diving into creative outlets like painting and crocheting. I’m definitely a “serial hobbyist”—always exploring new activities to see what sparks inspiration next! -Callie

Callie's Purpose Statement: Unveiling Her "Why" as a Therapist

I did not imagine myself becoming a mental health therapist. I know that sounds weird coming from a therapist, but I thought I'd be a doctor or a lawyer. However, as I became an adult and started working as a social worker within the child protective field, I started questioning the why behind each family I worked with. Why were they in this situation? Why did they make the choices they made? After a few years in that field, I started to see that each family I worked with struggled with common things - trauma, difficulty managing stress, and not having adequate support as individuals or as a family. Many of the parents or kids had someone that they could talk with to process every day events or help them solve daily problems. As a result, I could see how their daily struggles compounded into bigger and bigger problems or into a crisis. This is where I realized I wanted to become that support. I became a therapist and realized I thrive in the chaos of working with clients of all ages who are experiencing daily struggles all the way to clients in the midst of a crisis. Through doing this, I feel that I can be the sounding board and the support that many of my clients need. In my practice with clients, I challenge their thinking while also allowing them the space to feel the emotions that they have bottled up during all of the daily stressors. -Callie Beth Smith, LCSW

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at my Experience as a Therapist

I love using cognitive challenging and reframing. I enjoy using this because it can be tailored to various ages, diagnoses, and problems. It helps clients see a new perspective and confront problems from many different angles. I start and end every session the same way. I check in with my clients at the beginning of session to see where you are at or exactly what you are wanting out of your session for the day. Then at the end of session, I'll challenge you to do something new that is self-care related and I'll ask if there is anything else you want to talk about before we end our session. Your session is your time to work through whatever it may be so I want to make sure we do just that!  -Callie Beth Smith, LCSW

A Memorable Success Story

When I very first became a therapist, I had a client who came to seek mental health treatment and substance use treatment. She had been to treatment many times, but struggled to make significant progress. When starting services with me, she was homeless, lost custody of all of her children, had been using illicit substances for years, and had isolated herself from all of her previous friends and family members. I remember how the first day I met her she looked at the floor during our whole appointment. However, during that first appointment we made a plan to help her get to a point to where she could feel proud of the person she was becoming. Through her sessions, we talked through her struggles as a child and an adult. We formed a strong therapeutic bond where she felt supported and reassured that she could build the life that she wanted. Session after session, she showed up and put in the work. Over time, I could see the happiness and joy growing within her. Over the course of a year and half of coming to consistent sessions, this client was sober, had stable housing, stable employment, rebuilt healthy relationships with her family/friends, and had regained custody of her children. I don't think I have ever seen someone as proud as this client was when she walked in one day to my office and said "Callie, I've made it. I finally have a life that I'm proud of. -Callie

Maintaining Balance: How I Prioritize Well-Being to Serve Clients, Myself, and My Family

I enjoy having a 3-4 day work week. I spend my time off planning for my upcoming week while also doing a reset of my home. I keep myself on track by planning my daily schedule, meals, and incorporating scheduled time to care for myself through working out and downtime to crochet with my pups on the couch. Self-care is essential!
